The perfect opportunity to assess the breed in reasonable numbers so I really appreciated this invitation. This club is extremely fortunate to have acquired the services of Janet & Chris Quantrill who managed, stewarded and provided the refreshments thus allowing the Officers and Committee to be free to show their dogs. In preparation for judging this event I was disappointed to look again at the standard (interim) and find how lacking it was in specifics. A quick search through my files turned up the clubs extended version that was provided some years ago at their breed seminar. Armed with this excellent document I felt much better equipped to tackle the assignment. I felt that all of the exhibits were very typey, in the main square and probably capable of enduring a harsh environment. However, whilst most heads were quite well balanced many lacked the required width of skull resulting in a more pointed head rather than a blunt wedge and when accompanied by light eyes gave a very harsh expression. Another concern was the number of poor feet being long and flat exacerbated by weak pasterns, not particularly opened toed but definitely not round and catlike. Tail carriages were at best 'sickle' and I did not observe a single tail reaching to the topline as is the ideal. Lastly although not one single dog showed any signs of aggression I felt greater emphasis needs to be placed on socialising these dogs from a very young age since a good number showed considerably more than the standards stated 'aloof with strangers' attitude. I am well aware that his character is often described as 'suspicious' but if the Canaan wants to be taken seriously alongside the other breeds this problem must be improved upon.
VD/B(4,2abs) 1st Mintos Anacan Ziggy, approaching 12-1/2 and in great form belying his age, very well balanced all-through, good head properties with width to his almost flat skull and ears set wide, moderate stop, brown eye of good shape and set, strength extending to muzzle and finished with firm underjaw, decent front assembly to quite well knuckled feet, depth to brisket in balance with leg length, excellent topline and short firm loin, correct croup allowing tail to be set high, sound hindquarters with defined second thigh, shown in harsh coat and still moves with scope, RBIS & BV. 2nd Mintos Anacan Whole Lotta Class, feminine in all respects and presents a very square outline, super dark eye and expression, decent spring of rib and firm topline, not quite the tailset of 1, well modelled rear and easy reachy mover.
JD/B(3) 1st Mintos Anacan Sheeza Gem, R&W, square in outline and the most finished in this class with better topline and tailset, head needs to strengthen a little but at around 13m has time, lovely dark eye and pigment, straight forelimbs but feet could be better knuckled, clean neck, spring of rib suitable for age, sufficient definition to quarters, balanced steady mover once into her correct stride. 2nd Abbotts Anacan Genesis, well grown and of good shape, head yet to fill, lovely eye, not quite the front of 1, reasonable rib and topline, quarters well muscled and felt she could have demonstrated better action but not settled. 3rd Posenors Anacan Beautiful Promise, very feminine cream, balanced outline but has some way to go to fill her frame, balanced head with good ear placement and best of pigmentation, firm topline and fair tailset, well muscled rear, lacked confidence.
BegD/B(1) 1st Posenors Anacan Beautiful Promise.
Breeders D/B(1) 1st Mintos Anacan Kefira, thought this a very useful R/W, very well balanced in square frame, proportioned head with width to skull, moderate stop, excellent eye and pigment, sound front down to knuckled feet, depth to chest and reasonable spring of rib, defined tuck up, topline better on the move than when static, tail set fairly high, developed second thigh, co-ordinated mover displaying reach and drive, in good harsh coat, RBB.
PGD(1) 1st Abbotts Anacan Genesis.
LD(2,1) 1st Hughes Anacan Future Legend, white with red, towards the lower end of the scale, felt he fulfilled the requirements of the standard today, superb balance set off by clean head properties displaying strength and masculinity without coarseness, best of shoulders to straight front and tight knuckled feet, depth to brisket and ribs well filled, excellent topline and short firm loin, tail set and carried high, width to quarters in balance with front and very well muscled with which he displayed true action in all departments, shown in good coat and hard condition and a well deserved BIS.
OD(3) 1st Mintos Anacan Masterpiece, well grown light red, balanced square outline, masculine in outlook with med brown eye of good shape, nose could be darker, strong neck into straight front, and tight feet, depth to brisket and ribs quite well sprung, scored here in eye and topline, well placed croup and high tailset, could use better muscle tone, fair enough on the move, straight harsh coat. 2nd Coombes Lorianna Ever Ready, R/W, well grown with impressive headpiece, rather light eye detracts from expression, strong neck and decent front assembly, ribs well sprung and topline firm, not quite the hind angulation of 1, shown in good form. 3rd Powleys Sheleg Harishon at Danehaven, arrived late and consequently did not really settle to the job in hand, masculine with good head type and properties, excellent substance, would like to see him more relaxed on another occasion.
PGB(4,1) 1st Mintos Anacan Glory Bea, feminine W&R of good shape, very well balanced head with width to skull and muzzle to suit, neat ears set low, good pigment, fair front down to knuckled feet, clean neck and depth to brisket, firm topline and tailset, quite well defined second thigh, moves out with confidence. 2nd Mortons Anacan Akilah, feminine with substance, dark expressive eye, nose off colour, width to forechest, quite well sprung ribs, slightly longer caste than 1, reasonable topline and tailset, well muscled rear, steady mover. 3rd Posenors Anacan Beautiful Promise.
LB(3) 1st Powleys Anacan Maid for Glory at Danehaven, I see is litter sister to BD and very alike, super for balance being square with just enough length to leg, excellent wedgy head properties and expression, moderate stop and strength to underjaw, straight forelimbs, strong neck, ribs well sprung, beautifully modelled hindquarters, projected herself well in this company, if she is to continue in the 'glory' trail owner must watch her weight and pursue a more rigorous exercise regime as I found her rather soft and podgy but this aside she could not be denied the BB spot. 2nd Mintos Anacan Glory Bound, not the intense head properties or substance of 1 but is well balanced in a good frame, super eye and expression, straight forelimbs from elbows held firm, fair spring of rib and topline, defined tuck up, reasonable quarters, true enough on the move. 3rd Mortons Anacan Akilah.
Powley & Mintos Anacan Sheer Elegance, has size, type and substance but would prefer a darker eye, very good feet, topline far better on the move than when standing, well bodied, high set tail and some definition to hindquarters, moved out very respectably. 2nd Mintos Anacan Simply Irresistible, R&W, very feminine and pretty square, super dark eye and shape, fair front, just enough rib, excellent topline and tail set, defined second thigh, sound and true mover. 3rd Coombes Lorianna I Will Survive, lt red, very sound althrough and a very good mover, she too would benefit from a darker eye, not the substance of 1, firm topline, a welcome happy disposition.
Progeny (5,3) 1st Powleys Sheleg Harishon at Danehaven, although he had less offspring standing alongside him but included BD & BB it became obvious that he must win. 2nd Mintos Anacan Ziggy, grand old lad who has really done his bit for the breed.
Brace(3,1) 1st Mintos more evenly matched pair. 2nd Powleys.
